Forget Roger! It’s Jessica who we totally loved… Wasn’t she faaaaabulous?
The sultry wife of Roger Rabbit made her first appearance on film in the 1988
animated movie:’Who framed Roger Rabbit’, where she appeared as a singer
at the ‘Ink and Paint Club’ and who can forget her…
The movie was based on a book by Gary Wolf called: ‘Who censored Roger Rabbit’
however, the Jessica that you see on-screen is quite different from the Jessica in the
book, but on her case the on-screen version is definitely better… or at least that is
what her fans think. Moi included.
Jessica Rabbit’s femme fatale on-screen character was inspired on various silver
screen goddesses from Hollywood, such as the lovely Lauren Bacall:
The glamorous Rita Hayworth…
… And most notably Veronica Lake, the inspiration for Jessica’s sexy peek-a-boo
hairstyle, which became Jessica’s trademark.
But what made Jessica Rabbit’s character so popular? Was it her sexy voice?
- Kindly donated by Kathleen Turner – or was it the fact that she was married
to a rabbit? or was it her sexy and funny double entendres?
“I am not wrong, I am just drawn that way…”
“Roger, darling, I want you to know that I love you. I’ve loved you more
than any woman’s ever loved a rabbit.”
“Come on Roger let’s go… I’ll bake you a carrot cake”
“Is that a rabbit in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?”
Maybe it was a combination of all.
Didn’t we all love her?
Her much awaited come back to the big screen was supposed to happen on a film
called ‘Who Discovered Roger Rabbit’, but sadly the film never went ahead. Boo!
Jessica did however star in another 3 Roger Rabbit short films called ‘Tummy
Trouble’, where she appears as a sexy nurse,’Roller coaster Rabbit’ and ‘Trail
Mix up’, where she is a hot forest guard. Love her lines:
-”Do you need any help little campers?”
-”I must say you do look like you know what you are doing”
-”Have a nice lunch boys and remember, only you can prevent forest fires”
Although she has never returned to the big screen in over 20 years, Jessica Rabbit’s
iconic sultry image truly made a big impact and she continues to be regarded today,
as one of the true femme fatales in the history of cinema.
But when is she coming back? Oh, it’s only a matter of time I bet!
So far, she has already been already been un-tooned!
So I reckon that we will have her back on our screens pretty soon. I feel the whole
‘Tomb Raider, warrior woman’ thing is a bit passe now and it is dying rather quickly
and then it will be back to the classy and glamorous femme fatale women of the golden
days. Hence the Burlesque revival! Don’t we all want real glitz and glamour, picaresque
comedy and tease in the elegant and sultry style that only a femme fatale can deliver?
You can come and get your dose of that every Saturday at ‘The Wam Bam Club’.
Now if I was a Hollywood director, I would make Jessica Rabbit’s long due come back
possible in the shape of a movie with a twist. This time, she would not be a cartoon, she
would be real. She would be played by a Burlesque star – obviously – Dita Von Teese
comes to mind for the role, and the movie would be called: ‘Who stole Jessica Rabbit’
The plot: Jessica Rabbit -the cartoon- is kidnapped by the evil Burlesque star (Dita),
who steals not only Jessica Rabbit’s act but also her look and her wardrobe too! And,
yes, you guessed it… she is also after Roger. Ah, evil Dita!
So… Making Roger Rabbit and the world believe that she is the Jessica Rabbit – whose
secret wish of one day becoming human had been granted by accident by a kid who un
-tooned her. Dita manages to fool us all for a while, making us believe that she is the real
flesh and bones of Jessica Rabbit, whilst doing her best to “Teese” Roger to win his heart
and remain as the number femme fatale of our times.
However, there is a flaw in her evil plan… Dita’s lack of carrot cake baking skills
works against her charms and the truth is finally revealed, bringing the real Jessica
Rabbit back centre stage to perform again – as a cartoon – and most importantly…
back into the arms of her beloved Roger Rabbit. TA-DA!
If anyone has contacts in Hollywood please give them my number.
Now, ‘Why don’t you do right…’ and come and see us sometime?
xoxo
