When it comes to burlesque there are three types of people. Those who like burlesque,
those who love burlesque and those who have burlesque (inked) on their skin! I know!!!
Here are some fabulous examples of some amazing burlesque and pin up tattoos, as well
as some of the most glamorous tattooed burlesque girls!
Long gone are the days when tattoos were only associated with rock stars, navy men and
people in prison. Nowadays everyone sports them and they have become not only a very
unique personal fashion accessory, but also an artistic form of self-expression.
Tattooing has been practiced for centuries worldwide. The word “tattoo” (or Samoan “Tatau”)
first appeared in print in the journal of Joseph Banks, the naturalist aboard Captain Cook’s ship the HMS Endeavour in 1769: “I shall now mention the way they mark themselves indelibly, each of them is so marked by their humor or disposition”.
Tattoos have also been the inspiration not only for the most glamorous of fashion houses (Chanel, Rodarte) and fantastic photographers (Steven Meisel), but we can also see them as human art, as seen on the latest modelling sensation Rick Genest. Even fashion bible Vogue and the world’s top paid supermodels don them these days. So, it doesn’t come as a surprise that some our favourite pin up girls, today’s burlesque stars, are also rocking them.
Burlesque and Tattoos? Why yes! - If you got them flaunt them!
I live inside my skin every day – for me my tattoos are entirely normal. For others, they’re strange and intriguing.
– Says burlesque artist Beatrix von Bourbon whose fabulous figure features a large body of tattoo art which has become part of her trademark look and burlesque personality.
For me, they’re as much a part of me as the hair that I style or the face that I make-up and, accordingly, I feel they only dictate my actions as much as any other bodily element. That is to say, they certainly bare influence on the acts I make, but they’re not the centre-point.
In an article about burlesque and tattoos she poses a rather interesting question:
Do my tattoos influence what I do on stage, or is what I do on stage influenced by my tattoos?
To which she responds:
I want to be tattooed and I want to be on a burlesque stage. Both are dictated by me. At the bottom line, neither is dictated by the other – they’re both branches off the same root. Me.
Here is the lovely Beatrix performing as a stunning rock and roll version of a
