What do you mean Blaze who? Blaze Starr, as in “The Hottest Blaze in Burlesque”!!!
Born Fannie Belle Fleming (already sounds like a Burlesque star name don’t ya think?)
in January 1, 1932 Blaze is one of the star icons of the Burlesque scene. She was a femme
fatale, a sex symbol and a very talented actress and performer. Her vivacious presence
and her creative use of stage props earned her the title of: “The Hottest Blaze in Burlesque”.
She was also rather notorious for her love affair with Louisiana’s governor Earl Long.
She is the woman behind the character Blaze Starr – played by Lolita Davidovich
in the 1989 Paul Newman film Blaze, which is based, partly, on the real life of Starr.
The movie tells the story of the relationship between the stripper and the eccentric
governor who totally falls for her.
The film also takes a rather intriguing and fascinating look at how burlesque performers
are perceived by society and how the golden days of stripping completely changed from
the 50′s to the 60′s. Starr herself appears in a cameo role in the movie too. Here’s a little
slice of it:
Blaze also starred as herself in an earlier movie, which is one of the most popular nudie
-cutie films ever, the 1960′s production: “Blaze Starr Goes Nudist” Directed by Doris
Wishman.
Although the movie’s main focus is nudity (obviously), the film also celebrates Blaize’s
status as a sex symbol and her charismatic and fabulous personality. No other woman
could make a nudist camp appear more glamorous and chic.
“See nature’s carefree daughters in all their natural beauty…” – says the narrator in the
movie’s trailer, in the most enthusiastic and hilarious tone of voice. If like moi, you don’t
find nudity offensive, then this movie is definitely a must watch, especially if you are into
classic cinema. (You can catch the uncensored trailer of the movie HERE but make sure
that you are somewhere “nudity friendly” before you rush to watch it. Oh! and please, by
all means, DO NOT WATCH THIS AT WORK!!! – Even if it’s “tasteful nudity” at its best, it is
still nudity after all d’ya know? So your boss might not be very impressed by your love of
retro cinema)
Now here is the one and only Blaze Starr, in a classic and -literally- smoking hot
performance from the 1950′s…
… And here’s Beyonce’s latest vid ‘Why Don’t You Love Me’:
Any similarities there? A-ha! Now you tell me…
Burlesque stars are the most fascinating and inspiring of all creatures. They bring back
the glitz, glam and femininity of the 1950′s – along with that fantastic picaresque sense
of humor, so characteristic of the burlesque stars from the golden époque – but they are
also the incredibly creative, unique and talented contemporary artists and performers,
who are redefining the way in which we perceive the Art of Burlesque, today.
Come down to ‘THE WAM BAM CLUB’ this Saturday and be inspired too by our fabulous and
oh-so-glamorous and talented Burlesque stars! You will have a little bit of a giggle as well,
and PS – Nudity is not included (Sorry folks! – You are going to have to watch Blaze’s movie
for that)
