When the fabulous Lady Alex invited me to come along to Cafe de Paris to see
the ‘Wam Bam Club’, I was not even half-expecting what I was really about to let myself into.
Café De Paris in London’s Piccadilly, is one of the most dazzling, glamorous, iconic and historic venues in the world, with a fascinating history, spanning nine decades.
This fantastic London landmark is not only filled with the most exquisite decor
and dainty architecture, but the place also oozes history in every corner – you
can feel it as soon as you step in!
The Cafe has witnessed countless fabulous parties and shows throughout the years,
entertaining members of the aristocracy, eminent political figures, dazzling pop stars,
captains of industry, superstars and goddesses from the silver screen and even royalty.
Who is this pretty lady here? She looks familiar… Oh, it’s Princess Margaret.
Cafe de Paris is also the home of the ‘WAM BAM CLUB’, a fantastic and lively
fusion of comedy, magic, music and burlesque, brought to you by the fabulous
Lady Alex, who leads a fantastic troupe of talented, contemporary performance
artists.
So, full of anticipation and beaming with excitement, I made my way from leafy
Greenwich all the way into Piccadilly last Saturday, to find out what this show
was all about.
Surprisingly, it was a rather a pleasant and smooth journey into the city on the
tube, considering that it was a Saturday night. I was supposed to arrive by 6.30
pm so that I could attend the free Burlesque class that you get before the show,
so I was delighted to find out that it was only 6.15 pm when I got off at Piccadilly
Circus station.
Cafe de Paris is just about 3 minutes walk from Piccadilly Circus tube, so I
was there with plenty of time to greet the lovely man who welcomed me at
the entrance of the lush venue, and announce myself to the fabulously dressed
Burlesque ladies that greeted me at the reception desk and kindly ushered me
to my favourite place: the bar!
It must have been the first time that I was actually really early for something!
You can tell how raring to go and excited I was, particularly about having my
very own first Burlesque class.
To my surprise, the class – which started promptly at 6.30 pm – was given by
no other than the fabulous Ruby Deshabille, who is also one of the main stars
of the Wam Bam show! Need I mention how much more excited I was then?
A free Burlesque class? with real Burlesque props and accessories? Given
by a real Burlesque star? (who is not only so incredibly fabulous and such
a natural of the Burlesque scene, but also is the sweetest girl ever!) In
the most fabulous and dazzling venue in London? Yes, please!
I have to confess, I was a little nervous before the class started and I had come
on my own too, so I really didn’t know what to expect but it took me about 2.5
seconds to acclimatize and fall for the wit and charm of the gorgeous Ruby. In no
time I was mingling and chatting to my fellow classmates, who were also having
their first go at learning the basics of the art of Burlesque.
It was really funny when we all proudly went: ‘YES!’ in unison, when Ruby
asked: “Anyone here wearing stockings or suspenders?”

Ruby Deshabille
Swiftly, we found ourselves amongst a fun, sexy and addictive myriad
of glove pulling, stocking removing, feathered fan swinging and a hell
of a lot of shimming and hip shaking. Ruby taught us, not only how to
twirl our tassels and remove our gloves with our mouth – along with any
other “unwanted” items of clothing – in true Burlesque style…
but also,
she let us in on some fab secrets about the show and some very useful
trade tricks that only experience can really teach.
It was rather sad to have to go back to the bar when the lovely lady
with the most fabulous Dita-esque red high heels came to pick us up
at the end of Ruby’s class -which wasn’t at all short by the way – but
ya know, time flies when you are having fun removing your clothes!

The bar was already in full swing, full of elegantly dressed ladies and gentlemen,
who seemed very excited and eager for the show to commence, and so were we!
After a teaser like that, we couldn’t wait to see Ruby’s feathered fans on show at
the stage!
Shortly after, we were kindly escorted again, this time to our pre-reserved
dinner tables, were the loveliest and most attentive of all people look after
you. Believe me, service does not get any better than this.
I was treated like a real princess all night long by the lovely Will Breteau,
who looked after my every need in the most polite, friendly and courteous
manner, making me feel so welcome from the very beginning, right through
’til the end. I was so impressed with the service, so much so, that at one
point I thought that Will and I actually had telepathy… How did he know
that I love Martinis!?!
He was the best!!!
So, before I knew it I was already enjoying my Martini, whilst struggling to
choose from all of those fantastic options that the 3 course dinner menu at
Cafe de Paris Restaurant boasts.
My delicious SAUTÉED TIGER PRAWNS with a mixed leaf salad, mango salsa
and shallot vinaigrette – which I chose as a starter – arrived soon after and
were absolutely delicious. So was the ORGANIC SALMON FILLET with pommes
vapeur, sautéed vegetables and saffron velouté (pictured below) which was
to die for!
The main course arrived just in time before the curtains drew open and the
show began.
I didn’t know what was looking more scrumptious then, my organic salmon
or the fabulous Burlesque outfit plus top hat that the gorgeous Lady Alex -
Main Host, Ring mistress and star of the show – was wearing, as she made
her entrance into the main stage, perfect red pout and brunette curls underneath
her beautiful top hat.
Did I mention how FABULOUS her lingerie, tight boned corset, stockings and
suspenders were? Non?
The fantastic Cabaret Rouge ladies opened the show with a tantalizing Can-can
dance and – here between us – let me tell you that by the end of their hypnotizing
and lively performance, there was far more flesh than what I thought I’d be seeing,
but… boy-oh-boy was it nice flesh!
Have this girls ever heard about cellulite?
I thought… Clearly not!
Two words: Eye Candy!
After that exciting introduction, the fabulous Lady Alex came back and went
through the happy, cheery and very excited audience, spotting the birthday
boys, the hen parties, the tourists, the groups of friends and her beloved
“elderly friends”, whom she referred to so dearly, with a cheeky smile on her
face, whilst telling us all a couple of naughty little stories…
I have never laughed so much in my life, I was in stitches, seriously!
She then introduced the next acts, a fantastic array of incredibly talented
musicians, comedians, magicians, singers, dancers and performers which
completely steal your attention, leaving you unable to blink and with a constant
smile on your face. I loved each and every single one of them.
It was CHOCOLATE BAVAROIS with Grand Marnier cream and caramelized
almonds o’clock before I knew it, as the show kept unfolding revealing one
fabulous act after the other, with the time between each act managed with the
precision with which a surgeon operates his scalpel.
It was all perfect and seamless!
Here are some of my favourite jokes, quotes and images from the show:
“Are you moist with excitement?”
These guys here called Scales of the unexpected got an absolute standing
ovation at the end of the show last Saturday, they were AMAZING!
“have you ever been dumped by text?”
“Yeah”
“What did they say”
“LOL”
The hilarious Joe Bor:
“I have been having a lot of non-Christian thoughts about you.
But that’s just because I am a Jew”
“I hope I have not put you off your suckling pig”
I loved the sexy peek a boo feather fan routines:

The balloon head man, the fantastic Wes Zaharuk:
My lovely Burlesque teacher of course, the fabulous Ruby Deshabille:
And I couldn’t help but fall head over heels for the fabulous and drop dead gorgeous
Lady Alex, who is not only the host, ring mistress and creator of this fabulous show…
…but also, she is a great comedienne…
…a very talented actress and performer…
…and a fantastic Burlesque star!
Gosh! It had been a while since I had so much fun and enjoyed proper Princess
treatment with a personal touch, in the most decadent, glamorous and legendary
venue in London, a place that exudes 50′s retro, uber fabulous and sexy vintage
cabaret glamour. All those elements put together, along with a fabulous host and
a troupe of fantastic and talented performers, all inside one of the lushest, most
fantastic and historical venues in London, was way more than what was expected
by this vintage fashion, 50’s retro, Art and Burlesque loving fashionista.
Add a chocolate dessert to the equation and this girl was in heaven!
So, if you love music, comedy, burlesque, dancing, magic and performance with a
sprinkle of cheeky sensuality, vintage fashion, 50′s glamour, and AHEM, chocolate! ![]()
