We always see Scales on stage as a group, why not tell us a bit about yourselves as individuals?
Big Ian is addicted to taking his clothes off, Little Ian might as well face it he’s addicted to love and Bryan’s mum was a member of Hot Gossip which is why he is the Scales of the Unexpected dance captain!!
How long have you been performing at the Wam Bam Club?
We love the Wam Bam Club! We remember Wam Bam before it moved to its very plush surroundings here at Cafe de Paris. We’re so pleased that Lady Alex brought us with her and didn’t leave us behind. So in answer to your question…ages!
I hear you’ve been putting on your own show. How’s it going?
Great! We performed A Winter’s Scale, our Christmas extravaganza in December and it all went really well. Lady Alex came along too and really enjoyed it. We’re planning on doing more full length shows this year so keep an eye on the website for more info.
Where did you get the idea for your famous “Literal Choreography” routine?
I love literal dancing. It was a core part of our training at the Bananarama Academy (see below) and it is really the kind of dancing that we do best! The great thing about Literal Choreography is that anyone can do it…just listen to the lyrics and do what they tell you!
How did Scales of the Unexpected get started?
We met at a very prestigious music and dance school called BALC, the Bananarama Academy of Literal Choreography. The three of us were drawn together by our love of harmony and silly dancing we hung out together all the time and eventually realised that we’d better stick at it ‘cos there’s nothing else we were any good at!
Can fans hear your music online?
Yes if you go to our website, http://www.scalesoftheunexpected.co.uk, there are links to take you to video and music clips of Scales through the ages!
Who are your musical idols and influences?
Well, we are all fans of cheesy pop but the honest answer is “everyone we’ve ever heard”! There are so many great songs which is why we cram as many as we can into our numbers. And even if there is a song that we aren’t too keen on we always end up loving it once it has been given the Scales of the Unexpected treatment!
Can you give us a clue as to what to expect from Scales of the Unexpected in 2010?
Bigger and better in 2010! We’ll carry on doing the lovely Wam Bam Club and we’re taking a show up to Edinburgh this year (as long as no one breaks anything!). After the success of our Christmas shows, we’d like to do some more full length Scales spectaculars here in London too.

A great act
