An Interview with Rachael Polsom – Stage Manager

By Benet Simon on March 10, 2010

Rachael Polsum

Rachael Polsom

Come Saturday night, Rachael is Lady Alex’s right hand. You can see her on and around the stage, but you’d never learn enough to pick her out of a line up. Rachael has developed ninja like skills for fading into the background while she ensures acts get on and off stage on cue. It’s also her responsibility to ensure rehearsals only end when she knows how to set the stage for the routine, and how to ensure props come on and off at the right time. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for Wam Bam’s stage manager . . .

Can you give readers a run through of what you have to do on Saturdays?

Well, [Deep breath] I arrive 4 hours before the show goes up to manage the technical and sound check rehearsal. Continue reading “An Interview with Rachael Polsom – Stage Manager”

An Interview with Christian Lee

By Benet Simon on March 3, 2010

The magical Mister Christian Lee

Which magicians did you admire as a kid?

I did not get into magic till I was eighteen, when I got a job on a ship as a dancer – but they needed a magician! They had some bits left over and my magic life began.

What was your first magic trick?

A trick where the cards move on their own like a ghost was moving them! Very good, and I still perform it today.

What’s Cooking?

By Benet Simon on February 26, 2010

Chef Said Rafky

Chef Said Rafky

I’m checking my watch, because tonight’s Wam Bam show will be over in ten minutes, and the blue bar where I’m hoping to have a quiet beer with Chef is about to fill up with partying customers chatting about the show.

With seven minutes to spare, the door to the kitchen swings open, and as Chef comes out I catch a glimpse of a skyscraper stack of clean plates, still steaming from their wash.

Jason Wood

Jason Wood passed away on Saturday

I would like to offer a heart felt tribute to a true talent. One of the shining lights of the entertainment world and a cherished member of the Wam Bam family. Most importantly a real friend, Mr Jason Wood.

Jason sadly passed away yesterday, Saturday 20th Feb, and was scheduled to appear that night at Wam Bam to premiere his new Vegas act.

The Earl of Ealing’s Valentine’s Classics

By Earl of Ealing on February 9, 2010

The Earl of Ealing

Only Love Can Break Your Heart

Valentines Day is a day for love and roses, for chocolates and champagne, for kisses and sweet nothings. If you are lucky. Not everyone is in love on Valentines Day. Not everyone is happy and fluffy. You may have never found love. You may have found love but had it snatched from you. Your Valentine’s love may not even know who you are.

There are many songs about love. But none of the interesting ones are about how love is a wonderful thing, apart from Elvis with Love Me Tender.

So here are my top 10 anti-Valentine songs. Anti-romantic love songs. Real love songs. And no, I haven’t included This is Not a Love Song, because it isn’t a love song.

1. Love Will Tear Us Apart – Joy Division

Every silver lining has a cloud

2. Take your love and shove it – Joe Pesci

The catharsis of letting your lover know how you really feel

3. Where the Wild Roses Grow – Nick Cave and Kylie

You’re beautiful. I love you. Now I have to kill you

4. Walk on By – Dionne Warwick

The grief of a failed relationship. The pain of seeing an ex-lover

5. Valentine – Richard Hawley

Someone remembering their ex on Valentine’s Day

6. Tainted Love – Gloria Jones

When a relationship goes bad

7. I Hate Valentine’s Day – Jewel

Not a great song – but the title says it all!

8. Valentine’s Day – Marilyn Manson

This has nothing to do with Valentines Day, which makes it perfect for this list

9. I Touch Myself – Divnyls

A popular alternative to dating

10. Girlfriend in a Coma – The Smiths

Morrisey with the ultimate cheap date for Valentine’s

An Interview with Scales of the Unexpected

By Benet Simon on January 28, 2010

scales-of-the-unexpected.jpg

L-R: Bryan, Little Ian and Big Ian

We always see Scales on stage as a group, why not tell us a bit about yourselves as individuals?

Big Ian is addicted to taking his clothes off, Little Ian might as well face it he’s addicted to love and Bryan’s mum was a member of Hot Gossip which is why he is the Scales of the Unexpected dance captain!!

How long have you been performing at the Wam Bam Club?

We love the Wam Bam Club! We remember Wam Bam before it moved to its very plush surroundings here at Cafe de Paris. We’re so pleased that Lady Alex brought us with her and didn’t leave us behind. So in answer to your question…ages!

An Interview with Ruby Deshabille

By Benet Simon on January 19, 2010

Ruby Deshabille

Ruby Deshabille

What inspired you to become a burlesque performer?

I don’t ever remember a light bulb flicking on and my actually ‘discovering’ burlesque at any point. I kind of wish I did. I’ve always been interested in the slightly risqué and satirical side of comedy and performance; I love flamboyant and decadent costumes and the idea of artifice and actually being able to see the performer behind the character.
